Hanging out in Nauvoo

How do I even begin to tell how fun Nauvoo was for all of us?  These first pictures were taken the first evening we arrived.  We walked my sister Jamie to the temple where she works at night cleaning.  On the way the kids experienced fire flies for the first time.  They ran up and down the streets trying to catch them.  After dropping Jamie off at the temple we walked around it before heading back to her house for bed.

Here's the kids the next night with jars full of the fire flies!  They would catch them and then let them all go.

The next day we got up and headed down to Old Nauvoo to tour some of the sites.  We met the oxen and got to go for a little ride in a wagon and learn about the importance of oxen for the pioneers.

Then we spent some time at Pioneer Past times dressing up like pioneers and playing games and playing with toys that pioneer children would have played with.  Quincy and Gabby dressed up.  Corban didn't want to.

We went to a play put on by the Young Performing Missionaries in Nauvoo, Just Plain Anna Amanda.  Quincy got to go up on stage at the end.  I think it made her whole day!  She keeps talking about serving in Nauvoo when she gets older now.

Brother and Sister Burningham from our ward in Bountiful are serving in Nauvoo.  We tracked down Sister Burningham for a tour of the drug store.  She did a good job and it was so fun to see a familiar face!

The kids got to learn how to make rope at the Family Living Center.  They also learned about rug weaving, barrel making, baking, and more.

After spending a day in Nauvoo we headed over to Carthage to tour the jail where Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith were killed.  It was a sweet experience.  I told the kids that if they wanted to feel the spirit and gain a testimony of the prophet Joseph then they would at this place.  I told them to keep a prayer in their heart and to pay attention to the feelings that they would have.

Everyone had so much fun just spending time with Aunt Jamie.  They loved all of her dogs, catching fireflies in her back yard, "swimming" in her large bath tub, and hunting for geodes down along the river.  We almost lost Corban in the Mississippi mud!! Luckily just his shoe got stuck.

While we were coming back through Nauvoo after visiting my parents in Maryland the Nauvoo Pageant and the British Pageant were just beginning.  They run both shows during the month of July.  What a great surprise when I ran into my good friend Janene Christensen who was there with her family to see the pageant.  We served in the Young Women's presidency together in the Woods Cross 3rd ward.  Aunt Jamie was able to watch the beginning of the pageants, but then had a nice walk up to the temple to clean it.

Elder and Sister Burningham were a part of the cast at the end.

The kids found a few frogs around Jamie's house.  Corban was a bit nervous as the little frog he caught was super wiggly.  But they had fun with their froggy friends.

Jamie's amazing climbing tree!

Corban and his favorite buddy, Beau. He was really hoping that I would let him come home with us!
