California and the 4th of July

Our friends, the Hancocks, were going to be in California visiting their grandparents and invited us to come and spend some time with them.  We drove to Riverside where Grandma and Grandpa Hancock live and the kids were so excited to see their friends.

The next morning we headed for the beach!  My kids can't remember ever seeing the ocean.  The last time we went was when Quincy was about 3 months old.  It was so much fun!  The Hancocks had boogie boards for the kids to use.  I was a little bit nervous because none of the kids can swim well, but we kept a good eye on them and they were careful.

Corban had a blast on the boogie board.  He had a few good crashes in the waves that made him a bit nervous, but really had a lot of fun.

Quincy and Katelyn had fun jumping the waves.  There was a cute little boy that wanted to be their friend.  He kept coming up and holding Quincy's hand to jump the waves with her.  His parents thought it was so cute and kept trying to get pictures of them together.  He was probably a large 4 year old and 7-year old Quincy was very patient with him and his picture taking parents.

Curtis Hancock's sister Sundee, Lyndsay Hancock (my bestie), and her mom Lorna Davis hanging out at the beach.
Poor Bump started getting really sick while we were at the beach.  This is the last picture of him sitting up for the entire week.  He started throwing up that afternoon and didn't stop for a few days.  Always a fun thing when you are staying at a stranger's house.
Walking to the bushes to hurl. . .

Day 2 we went to the nearby college and went on their nature walk around the botanical gardens.  It was a REALLY hot day and we tried hard to enjoy the shady parts of the walk.
Here is Katelyn and Quincy. (And Lyndsay with her cute baby bump in the back)
We saw quite a few animals while walking around.  Frogs, turtles, rabbits, squirrels and lizards.  Gabby tried to capture them all with her camera.

Lyndsay and Me.  I love this girl!
We had a shaving cream war in the back yard and then ran across the street to their neighbors house to swim it off.  It was fun, but left a white coating on everything the shaving cream touched!
By then end of the day Bump was so sick he asked Lyndsay's Dad, Brother Davis, for a blessing.  Then he sent us to the local InstaCare.  They said Bump was really dehydrated and stuck an IV in him.  They gave him some meds for nausea and with the IV fluids, he started feeling a bit better.

The next morning we left Riverside and headed to my brother Dave's house to spend the 4th of July with cousins.  Bump ended up just sleeping the rest of the trip and we left him home on the 4th.  The kids played together and had fun catching up.

Uncle Dave took us out to Hawaiian Ice - Wow what a treat!

The 4th of July we woke up and headed over to Julie's Uncle Tommy's house for a BBQ, swimming and FUN!  The food was good and the pool was wonderful.  The kids got to meet lots of new friends.

Uncle Tommy has awesome trains and he let the kids take turns running them around his back yard track.  They loved playing with them!

When dusk hit, out came the glow sticks.  We watched some awesome fireworks from Tommy's front yard.  Some of the illegal neighborhood ones were just as good!  :)
It was a fun 4th of July and would have been perfect if Bump could have enjoyed it with us.
I must say, it was hard to try to be social and have a fun time when Bump was so sick!  It's not something I would like to do again.  :)  I kept thinking "what a waste of a vacation." And I think it was for him, but it was still really fun to see family and friends and the kids had a blast.  And that's what's really important about a vacation, isn't it?
