For all those of you who are TRUE children of the 80's this post will be a blast from the past. . .
Remember the years when mom's were risking their lives for Cabbage Patch Kids on Black Friday? And the harsh reality that you felt when your mom MADE your Cabbage Patch Kid and it had a fabric face instead of hard plastic? Or maybe you were the lucky one that had one or even a few of the precious dolls? You lucky, spoiled thing. . .
Anyway, for those of us who didn't get to appreciate the joy of having our own CPK, or who just thought they were stupid and a waste of money (only a boy would feel like that) there were other options. For mere change you could turn your attention to the gross, nasty, snot and puss-filled world of Garbage Pail Kids.
Remember the foil packages that when opened would waft the scent of bubble gum into the air? Remember that hard, break-your-teeth rectangle that after chewing on for a few minutes would become a bit of gum that would too quickly lose it's flavor? But you didn't buy the package for the gum - NO, that was only an added bonus to the joy contained inside - a demented world of parody, mocking the dolls that you couldn't have, or didn't want. I am sure that my mom loved having these around the house! I wonder how many jobs I asked to do to save up money to buy a package. They were a really big deal in my adolescent mind.
When I met Bump in high school he had an amazing collection of NBA trading cards. I thought they were great, but I got really excited when he pulled out his collection of Garbage Pail Kids cards. I couldn't believe the memories that they brought back and we spent a lot of time looking at them. He was incredibly bummed though when he got home from his mission and his basketball cards were around, but his GPK cards were nowhere to be found. We still don't know what happened to them and were talking about them a few months ago.
Bump started looking online to see if they would be worth anything and realized that they were still available to buy. I don't know if they quit making them and then started again, or if they just never went away, but he decided that he needed to possess some of them again!
He was thrilled to find them at Target and came home with quite a few for the kids to open up. We were sad to find that they don't include the "gum" any more, but they are doing GPK Flashback cards, so we can see and appreciate some of the originals that we used to own.
Here's to the memories. . . enjoy my husbands quirky side. He loves these dang things, and I have to admit, they make me smile. :)

Oh. My. Word...the memories that flood back with these cards....good grief ;)!
I'm having flashbacks of recess during elementary school. My friends and I would share/trade/compare cards. They are just as gross as I remember them. Thanks for sharing!
So many memories... I love it!
EEEWWW!
I'm wondering what happened to mine? I'm sure my Mom got rid of them as soon as she could. I still have my gigantic charm bracelet!
That was a hilarious post. I have to admit I was too old for all that in the 80's. I remember Marty's sister Lorna fighting over Cabbage Patch dolls at the store for his nieces. I do remember getting a kick out of those cabbage Pail kids cards. They are so funny. Thanks for the memories!!
Oh my...that is funny!
That is hiliarious. I could not remember the GPK until you showed the cards. Yes, a flood a memories. We had tons of them. How funny. I did get a cabbage patch kid after they stopped being so popular. I still have them and my kids play with them. But we had homemade Carebears.
