I just returned from my very first book club. I know, it's crazy given how much I really love to read that I have never actually been involved in a book club! Anyway, our Relief Society started one at the first of the year and started out by reading The Peacegiver. What a great book! If you haven't read it I highly suggest that you do!Well, I signed up to have the book club at my house in May and need to pick out a book. So, I am requesting from each of you some books that you could recommend. What are some that you have enjoyed in your various book clubs? and why? It doesn't necessarily need to be an LDS book, but it should be uplifting and clean.
Even if I don't choose your book to use for the book club, I am always looking for great books to read personally. Thanks for your input!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. I loved it! It's a great story that is written in a unique format (through letters) and shares some of the history of of the island of Guernsey during the German Occupation of WWII.
I was going to suggest that book as well!! LOVED IT!! There is also The Wednesday Letters which I really enjoyed...read it first though. I love the Believing Christ books. Also love the classics, A Tale of Two Cities, ect. and anything Jane Austen. I liked Traitor, and Elder Maxwell's books. Also Sister Hinckley's little book. Oh my! Too many to choose from...I'll stop now!
I recently read "A town like Alice" by Nevil Shute and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's about a woman stuck in Malaysia during World War 2. It really brought home to me the stength and influence that one woman can bring into the lives of others. You can google it to see if it's something you'd be interested in.
My favorite book of all time is Gone With the Wind, but I suppose it might be a bit lengthy and could offend some people with with it's political incorrectness:)
Have fun!
Ditto that Marisa! I love Gone With the Wind.
The Guernsey Potato....etc. etc. (lengthy title) is fabulous. And perfect for a RS book club.
The Secret Life of Bees is always a favorite.
Peace Like a River is fabulous. (Can't remember if there is any language in there though.)
Our book club is reading Emma by Jane Austen. There is a new series on PBS every Sunday at 8:00 for the next few weeks. It started this last Sunday but it is online as well. A fun one to do for Valentines Day.
Good luck!
Erin, here are some of my favorites. I've listed quite a few cuz it's so hard to choose! Each is so different:)
Winners Never Cheat by Jon Huntsman
The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of those who survived the great American dust bowl by Timothy Egan
Team of Rivals by Doris K. Goodwin
Stolen Lives by Malika Oufkir
Running With Angels by Pamela Hansen
Flight of the Fisherbird by Nora Martin
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
I'm anxious to see all the wonderful books everyone else mentions. It seems like we're all on the lookout for good books that are not offensive!
I've been a member of a book club for 12 years. Yikes! Some of our favorites have been mentioned as well as: Cry the Beloved Country, Count of Monte Cristo, The Hiding Place and Tramp for the Lord, 10 Fingers for God, Lorna Doone, The Book Thief, Left to Tell, At Home in Mitford, Mountains Beyond Mountains, A Man Called Peter, Screwtape Letters.
Book Clubs are great! I think the best part is not the book discussion or the food but the getting together with my sisters to talk and laugh.
man I feel like a little kid listing some of these, but I can't help it! I love them!
The Giver
The Princess Bride
Ender's Game
Ender's Shadow (don't have to read the other first, they are independent of one another)
Hunger Games Series
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Bridge to Terabithia
The Greatest Salesman in the World
I think that's it for my absolute favorite and non-religious list. My religious list I'm just too tired to add. :)
I loved The Last Lecture as well. Richard Paul Evans writes charming, well-paced uplifting stories also.
We read The Mormon Way of Doing Business, which was great. It was so interesting and then when 9/11 hits NYC it was very compelling.
The Giver is great.
The Price Winner of Defiance, Ohio by Terri Ryan(?) is wonderful. It's the story of her mother who wrote jingles and entered writing contests to help support their family in the 50s.
Have fun!
Mitch Albom's books are good...Tuesday's with Morrie (it does have one swear word in it).
The Last Quilter by Jennifer Chiaverini was good (I haven't read the others in this series but loved this one)
Try this link

The secret life of bees
The count of montecristo
The Life of Pi
Ok, sorry to leave another one but I forgot about one that you would REALLY like. My hubby got it for me a few months ago when I was going through some things. It is called Happiness is a Serious Problem. It is one of those life-changing books that everyone should read. Not fictional, but it is one that I will re-read often. You are getting a good list going here!
